carnosine supplementation useless ?

Post  Shinobi on Tue Dec 22, 2015 12:53 pm

Hi,

I used to discuss here whenever it was best to consume pure carnosine or supplement with beta alanin instead (the missed peptide to make carnosine).

I thought the body was able to degrade carnosine via carnosinase slow enough to allow us to consume large dose above 500mg per 5 hours to be protected by the carnosine effect. But it seems we was wrong:

http://ajprenal.physiology.org/content/302/12/F1537.long

in humans only 8 out of 25 subjects administered 60 mg/kg carnosine (4200 mg in a lean 70 kg adult male) exhibited a detectable increase in plasma carnosine, which was largely over in an hour in most subjects and totally gone by two), and there is a potential safety issue highlighted in people with carnosinemia

A problem with studies like this is that interpretation of serum levels leaves a lot out of true physiology.

There are many profound studies on what carnosine does and how it works may have little to do with serum levels.

I've stuck with beta-alanine since it has a dual purpose with exercise, is $30 per Kilogram, tastes fine, and mixes into water like sugar.

CS the problem is the pharmakokinetics. We do not have really data about that isnt ?

For beta alanin i wouldnt play with it, it was discussed before and it deplete the taurine level > can be dangerous for the cardiovascular system

I agree about the Beta-Alanine.....

As for Carnosine, it's the best anti-aging nutrient out there. I've been taking it for a very long time (with some sporadic spacing). As for as what it has done, I've never seen anything else do it.

The differences in animal research on a visual level is astounding. However as forums go, it doesn't take much to scare people. I will never go without this stuff as long as I can.

Carnosine is one of the best stuff, its confirmed by all the studies, it does a lot but the fact it show its not well absorbed is sad. However maybe you right about the cell absorption difference with serum level. Whats the most important when it come to skin protection ? Because carnosine not only allow cell to divide much more, it also break down the AGE wich is directly coralated to skin aging. There i a brand which use a AGE breaker and showed a 18% decrease in vivo on skin damage corresponding to about a 10 years back ! The AGE breaker is a Rosmarinus officinalis extract and we know carnosine is above all such extract...

Doesn't beta-alanine only lower taurine for the several hours after supplementation? The only study I remember being posted against beta-alanine was with rats given mega doses around the clock in the water. Thought it was generally safe as long as taurine was taken at a different time and candida is kept under control.

Hi CS,

Have you ever tried carnosine in treating Parkinson's. If so did there appear to be any benefit.

Also has there been any new methods for treating Parkinson's in the past year or two.

Thanks

Hi ubraj - Yes. I regularly "prescribe" (recommend) Carnosine for Parkinson's.  I can say that personally it's done wonders for me getting rid or diminishing forehead lines. Between that and the lipoic acid, my face has people guessing my age (they are usually surprised).

Regarding Parkinson's on new treatments. Yes, I am sure you are already aware the iron overload is huge problem in Parkinson's. I have had good results adding Tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA), or when possible a script for Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) in its place since it is covered by insurance. It improves energy.

Towards the bottom of this article I have a link to a reliable form of it.

Thanks CS.  I appreciate it.  Without my EMF devices can't get control on it too well.

Neighbor put up solar panels making dirty electricity high at my house making things harder.

I did a quick google search under "UDCA prions."  Has some interesting info FWIW.

Majority with Parkinson's have hemochromatosis based on a study.  Have removed blood at my house. Initially had great results like many others on a Parkinson's forum.

Thanks again for the info.  Will try out carnosine and TUDCA.

ubraj - This article maybe of interest to you.

http://balancingcenter.com/articles/01rubidium.html

It relates to the trace mineral rubidium and iron absorption and excretion.

CS, would 500mg per day make a difference? Or is that considered too low a dose?
