Are White Kidney Beans Canned In Water Considered "Soaked"?

Post  johndoe1225 on Sat Apr 09, 2016 11:31 am

Hey all!

One of my main dishes I make is vegetables with beans, and the beans I use are white kidney beans canned in water and salt.  I put them in a strainer and rinse them, then add them to the pot with the vegetables, along with some olive oil, and cook them for maybe 10-15 minutes, but I started to wonder, are these beans considered "soaked"?  They are in that water for so long, I thought they would be.

I might try simply eliminating beans all together and seeing what happens.

EDIT: I was wondering about all beans canned in water not just these beans, we also use Pinto beans every week.

Thanks for any help

I think they might be considered that.
I remember reading beans having something bad, if not soaked properly? but I guess that is way before cooking, and canned beans are already cooked.

But, watch out for too much canned food, cans are lined with Bispehnol A on the inside. You can get "BPA free" though.

I am pretty sure that the point of soaking beans is
1. to pre-hydrate them uncooked so they can be cooked faster.
2 to soak uncooked long enough to start germinating them altering the chemistry and nutrition components.
3 I would presoak beans in a vinegar solution (like a capful per gallon of water, this would take away some of the ass gas producing components.

So I think with canned beans you cannot be sure how they prepared the beans, they may be just cooked and not soaked

Hmm, ok thanks guys, good points.

Legumes aren't really allowed on Paleo anyway, so I shouldn't be eating them at all, I'll try completely removing them and see what happens.
