(Newbie) Need suggestions regarding starting new supplements for hair loss

Post  adam290 on Mon Apr 25, 2016 3:55 am

Hi there,

This is my first post. I'll just briefly tell about my hair loss case. I have been losing hair for 4-5 years. I had good thick hair before that. I remember I started having pimples and other skin issues at the same time I started losing hair. My face used to be very clean before that. So, I went to a dermatologist he gave me minoxidil 5% and a multivitamin supplement. I didn't get any results for 5-6 months on that. I stopped taking multivitamin but kept using minoxidil. After almost a year, I wanted to stop minoxidil. But, then I came to know about if I stopped using it then I'd lose more hair. So, reluctantly didn't stop. Last year, I consulted another hair specialist and he suggested me taking dutasteride 0.5 mg every 3rd day and other multivitamins like calcium, iron etc. I knew the sides but the doctor said just use duta for 6 months, regrow some hair and then we'll get you other supplements to maintain. But I never regrew any hair.

Afraid of the sides, just after a month I started taking duta 1 tablet every 6 day. I ordered Now Foods Prostate Health which has Saw Palmetto, Pumpkin Seed Oil, Nettle Root Extract and Zinc in the meanwhile. That didn't help. In the November 2015, I stopped taking Dutasteride. From January this year, I stopped applying minoxidil. I didn't experience any heavy hair loss after that. But, I have been thinning gradually. I came across Immortal Hair forum a few weeks back. I never knew that hair loss can be reduced without having to to curb DHT. After doing some research here, I know that there are some good supplements that can be taken for hair loss but are good for your overall health being. Unfortunately, Good Ecklonia Cava supplements are not available where I live (India). Swanson brand's are available but I read that they are not that good. Plus, I can afford to use only a handful of supplements in mu budget. I read that curcumin, resveratrol, msm, glucosamine, chondroitin, toco-8, krill oil etc are some of the good supplements that can be used.

I know this may have been asked many times, but what are the 4-5 supplements that I should include. Can't order from iherb. We have to pay an import duty for supplements which is exactly the same as the price of the supplement. So, it is out of my budget. Currently, i am using Now Foods Prostate Health, Ashwagandha (375mg), flaxseeds powder (made at home), omega 3 (300mg). I am planning to drop Prostate Health as it has saw palmetto. I am 26 years old. One more thing is, since 1-2 years I have a lot of muscle weakness. Specially, muscles in my arms ache. Please guys, provide me some guidance.

Thanks

a good top 6 would be :

taurine + b6 (one capsule)
glycine
beta alanine (carnosine)

they are similar in structure and action, which is blocking estrogen and protecting collagen

methylene blue and caffeine - taken orally, to fix mitochondria
http://journal.frontiersin.org/article/10.3389/fncel.2015.00179/full

maybe vitamin k2 and d for the other 2 supplements. it depends

not doing a low carb diet
eating grass fed meat and dairy, high quality eggs too

First time I've seen you mention eggs. Why?

Sorry guys. But I am a little short on budget I saw the prices of some of the supplements. They are just too expensive. I guess, I'd have to use 2-3 supplements for a while at least till I get increment in my salary (2-3 months). So, what should I start with? I am not expecting miracles, but at least my hair loss should reduce. After searching, I came across Vit k2 & d3 supplement that fits in my budget. I have vitamin d3 defecieny btw. Also, I get headache due to caffeine.

So in beginning, will it be okay to take beta alanine + k2 & d3 + taurine ? And, what is the ideal dosage? I already take a supplement that has 300 mg taurine in it. I don't know if it is sufficient. Plus, the protein powder I take has some glycine in it (abt 200 mg). Currently I can afford to take 2-3 supplements, so just want to know which should I start with. Sorry, for bugging you guys.

a bottle of vitamin d lasts about 1 or 2 years, when you apply a drop or spray to the wrist

I would definitely find what's causing the muscle aches and weakness. Personally I have aches like that when I am hungover which is caused by glutathione depletion. Something systemic like that is probably effecting your hair as well. On a side note, if you want sexy looking hair look into getting an LLLT device.

MSM. Really cheap if you don't take doses like I do.

And buy the POWDER, capsules are a scam.

I will be taking Krill Oil. I will probably be buying MSM. I guess it helps muscles also. Was also thinking about combo of Glucosamine, chondroitin, resveratrol.

@NDW I don't have much idea about lllt. But, I'll look into it as well.

@Sage1 I thought Krill Oil was very good. It had 6 times the Omegas. So if I'm taking flaxseeds, should I not take krill oil? Have very little idea about all this.

What should be the dosage of MSM? What about glucosamine, chondroiton, resveratrol?

if we view hair loss as a form of aging

methylene blue/caffeine

glycine
beta alanine (carnosine)
taurine
(all similar components)

maybe resveratrol

will help the most to delay cellular senescence. See longecity, they write a lot about those substances.

Oh also Taurine.

I take 1 gram, going to try bumping it up slowly to 2 grams by adding 500 mg in the morning over a week or so, then finally taking 1 gram in the morning and 1 at night.

Supplements are the first place people look when they turn to natural treatment, but also seems to have the least amount of photographic evidence/success stories to back it up. I hope you have your lifestyle and diet in check first, and that these supplements are not intended on being your first line of defense.

Remember they are to 'supplement'. It's barely a sliver of the pie. Just keep that in mind as you fight off your hair loss Smile

@iuyyighghghgkh where can I buy methylene blue? I don't see its supplements being around. What should be the dosage? Is methylene blue also used for UTI?
