MSM Supplementation, Which Mineral Does It Antagonize?

Post  johndoe1225 on Sat Oct 08, 2016 11:08 am

Hey everyone!

I've been taking glorious MSM for awhile now (well maybe under a year), I used to take 1 tablespoon in the morning and one in the evening, but lately I've been taking 1 tablespoon in the morning and a half tablespoon in the evening.  I pair it with a bit more than 1/4 teaspoon of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) powder.  It says 1/4 tsp is 1 gram, I'm probably getting a bit more than that, it's hard to measure.  I take it in the same water I mix my MSM powder in, so probably around 2-3 grams of vitamin C per day.

I remember reading on here that someone (it might have been 4039) said that MSM is an antagonist of some mineral, but I can't remember which ones...I want to say Molybdenum...Or Boron...I was thinking about taking a multi-mineral (without iron) from my local VS just in case, since this is a pretty high dosage of MSM.

Also, I know I should just get a gram scale or whatever, but until then, how much is a tablespoon of MSM powder?  I thought it was 15 grams, but I think it's actually 7.5 grams, I'm confused...

Thanks everyone Very Happy

EDIT: Also, MSM doesn't cause weight loss, does it? I'm trying to gain weight, I'm eating like a MFer but barely maintaining.

Thanks!  Guess I'll just take a multi-mineral to be safe.

Is Solaray a good brand?  There isn't much choice from my local VS in the way of multi-minerals. Or Source Naturals? I've used their Chlorella.

EDIT:  Hmm, that seems to have all kinds of stuff like iodine, etc., which I'm sure I get enough of because I use a lot of iodized salt on my food...Maybe I should just get a Molybdenum supplement by itself?

While there are arguments about taking a pure MSM with really nothing else within 30 minute window....It will still work.

This MSM here also comes with some vitamin C and a good amount of Molybdenum.

According to this website from Acu cell nutrition it can antagonize with other minerals as well:

http://www.acu-cell.com/ses.html

"With sulfur being a calcium, copper, and potassium antagonist, a high intake of glucosamine sulfate, or MSM
may worsen low calcium-related disorders such as insomnia, fatigue, anxieties, or bone loss, aggravate low
potassium-related cardiac, or renal / genitourinary conditions, or worsen low copper-related infections."

To which degree I'm not sure. I know MSM is used in copper chelation protocols as well.

Hmm, interesting, but the part about copper, it actually says that sulfur's positive effects may even be partly from lowering elevated copper levels.  I'm wondering at what dosage this occurs. I also take around 30mg of zinc (optizinc) most days of the week, and I know that zinc is another copper antagonist, and vitamin C along with the MSM, which apparently is too.

I suppose I should just take a multi-mineral to be on the safe side.

EDIT:  I actually read that only around 150 calories worth of pumpkin seeds (which I love) has around 48% the DRV of copper, maybe I'll just take a bunch of that?  It would even help with weight gain, too, not to mention being delicious Very Happy

Does msm have any effect on cortisol? I read a few forum posts were people said it raised it, but I couldn't find any data to back up the claim. I've read some people also saying that it inhibits sleep.
