coffee in relation to insulin spikes and hair loss...?
Hi Guys,
Any info on if coffee is a negative dietary factor for us balders?
Over on another forum people tend to agree it can lead to insulin spikes.
I have mine black, extremely short restricted double shot over a small bit of hot water. no sugar.

Coffee has many health benefits, especially unspoiled without milk or sugar. There was one study that coffe drinkers at three cups a day has significant less mouth and throat cancers.

Look, uh, the way I see it, when they say something has an anti-cancerogenic benefit, I make sure to stay as far away from it as possible. I swear *everything* can prevent some sort of cancer today.
I started drinking coffee moderately at one point and the next thing you know I'm drinking a liter-a-day of the blackest sugarless, milkless everythingless gunk you can imagine. 'Coincidentally', in the one year period of said abuse, I shed - and indeed permanently lost - somewhere between half and two thirds of my overall hair. Make of that what you will.

You have to be careful because coffee is very acidic. It's good that you take relatively low amounts of it but in my opinion you should switch to Tea. I have been alternating green, white, & red (rooibos) tea and it is usually more than enough to get me going. Not to mention that these teas are loaded with healthy antioxidants and polyphenols. Although these teas generally have less caffeine than a cup of coffee I have found that they make me more mentally alert not just a physical high like coffee.
Green Tea for example contains EGCG. Here is a good excerpt:
That is a crazy quote as I have never heard that EGCG is even more powerful than resveratrol.

Links are being made between the effects of drinking green tea and the "French Paradox." For years, researchers were puzzled by the fact that, despite consuming a diet rich in fat, the French have a lower incidence of heart disease than Americans. The answer was found to lie in red wine, which contains resveratrol, a polyphenol that limits the negative effects of smoking and a fatty diet. In a 1997 study, researchers from the University of Kansas determined that EGCG is twice as powerful as resveratrol, which may explain why the rate of heart disease among Japanese men is quite low, even though approximately seventy-five percent are smokers.

Coffee increases cortisol levels, increased cotisol results in hair loss.

I tend to get acne flare ups when I drink coffee (black or otherwise).
Since I've heard acne regarded as "skin diabetes" it doesn't surprise me that coffee can cause insulin spikes.

In fact, there are studies that show an inverse correlation between coffee intake and developing diabetes type 2
There are no carbohydrate energy in coffee beans, there is a mental stimulation which is entirely different from ordinary energy burning,.

Would depend on the coffee drinker. Most of the people at my work use all sorts of artificial sweeteners and creamers.

Yeah it is called caffeine. Unfortunately caffeine has been proven to wake you up but not enhance memory.

One of my favorite health benefits about coffee is the health benefits upon the liver that research had confirmed a few years back.

The latest news on coffee that I've heard is on timing. If you drink it in the morning, its effect on insulin is negligible, but drink it with lunch, the caffeine can raise insulin levels. Drinking it in the evening makes the most pronounced spike in insulin levels. Also in the evening when cortisol levels should be tapering off, the coffee may keep them elevated which may adversely affect hair.

Happyman- I'm a huge tea drinker, I usually drink one bowl of Matcha and three cups of White or Green tea a day. If you want an awesome green tea find a good Gyokuro from japan, it's awesome.
Caustic- I will hardly ever drink coffee after 11am, so hopefully that's cool.

Interestingly you say that CS. I had a great grandfather who had a full head of dark hair up till he was 70, besides being constantly active everyday of his life there were two things he would always do. He would have 1 cup of home made organic coffee in the morning and at night he would have a whole garlic bulb with his dinner. Even in his 90s he kept most of his hair even though it was gray by that time.
Unfortunately the doctors out right murdered him. Though before they did they said "he was the fittest most healthiest old person they'd ever seen".
Though i only drink a cup of coffee maybe once every 3months, for those that do drinking it in the morning sounds like a great idea.

CS,
Does this rule hold for other glycemic foods, or just coffee? Are insulin spikes somewhat more acceptable in the morning than in the afternoon/evening?
