Post  RobHealthMan on Sun Nov 08, 2009 5:00 am

hi guys,
I dont know if im zinc deficient but when i read about the foods that have zinc, i'm willing to bet i am.

i want to start to take this but worried about the dosage. I read somewhere too much zinc is dangerous to hair!

any insight would be great! thank you!

15-30mg of Zinc Picolente should be good amount.. it should be balanced out with 1-2mg of copper though..

bj, That should be Zinc Picolinate...

I personally use L-OptiZinc (not OptiZinc which is the older version) probablly the best in terms of absorption, besides it doesn't block copper absorption.

I use 30 mg a day of it without problems.

I'm taking 50mg picooinate twice a day on top of the 30mg picolinate/ZMA in my multi-vitamin. I'm guessing I'm taking way too much then!? Have I been taking dangerous amounts?

CS said that we need extra zinc, so maybe I went overboard? I take it with vit-c and mag for adrenal support- it is calming.

What is the max I should take? Should I even take one 50mg in addition to the 30mg in the morning multi?

Anyone ever read anything about the methionine form of zinc being toxic and pro-cancer? I've stumbled across some links that mention it in the past.

Probably "dangerous" over a fairly long period of time.

The 30 mg in your multi might not be too much absorbed (depending on the form) due to fiber in food and calcium (and other minerals). Another aspect to consider is that the elemental zinc you get from 15 mg of any zinc compound (organic or inorganic) is never 15 mg, probablly half that amount or less.

I definitely believe we (men, specially balding ones) need more quality Zinc. I also believe the RDA is too low (15 mg).

As long as you are taking a small amount of copper, probably you can do fine taking 60 mg or more of a quality zinc supplement. BTW, L-OptiZinc doesn't compete with copper's absorption. Higher levels, like 100 mg and above are fine if taken for limited periods, for example when you have leaky gut syndrome, acne and other problems.

I've been using 30 mg for a long time (plus zinc from my food based multi and other dietary sources like yeast) without any problems. Good for my skin, hair and sex life. So based on my experience, I can safely recommend you 30 mg of supplemental Zinc (50 mg - 60 mg is probably just fine). Add P-5-P for extra benefit if you want. This combo might do wonders for your skin (another excellent thing for this is ChromeMate).

Instead of using 50 mg of Zinc Picolinate opt to use 30 mg of L-OptiZinc once or twice a day... I think that might be a better way.

I have noticed that when my Zinc levels are higher (or optimal) my skin is clear, sperm color and volume is "healthier" and my immune system is stronger. Since Zinc is very cheap, I see no reason not to make it part of everyone's daily regimen.

Thanks LF,

That was really in depth and helpful. I only get whatever copper is in my multi- I'll have to check. Zinc is inexpensive, but I'm on a very strict budget and I might as well go through this bottle of picolinate first. I think based on what you said that I will just take one 50mg in addition to the 30mg picolinate/ZMA in the Now Adam multi. I need to read up on what exactly the ZMA is in the Now products. It is patent pending.

I agree it would be great to hear what CS says about maximum zinc intake. I believe he wrote a bit about it under the 'physiology' section...could be mistaken.

Are any of you taking a supplement that has both zinc and copper in it?

I take the following daily:

- 1 capsule containing 30 mg of L-OptiZinc (no copper)
- 15 mg of food-based zinc (100% RDA) + 1.5 of food-based copper (75% of RDA) <-- the only supplement with copper I take
- zinc & copper from meals (uknown amounts)

The food-based supplement I use is a fermented whole-food multivitamin.

I also use Brewer's yeast, which also provides some food-based (minerals bound to protein, which are safer and much better absorbed than oxides or chlorides, ie zinc oxide) copper and zinc.

As you can see I'm no taking any extra copper for the 30 mg of extra Zinc I use.

I found this product, looks excellent... it even includes some chelated copper and it's inexpensive:

I have only heard the opposite.

I would believe it is true for mega doses over a long period of time in part due to the pro-oxidative effect of very large doses.

JHarsh,

Just be sure to order this one next time Very Happy

I will get this product when I run out of my current supply. What I'm currently using contains only L-OptiZinc. The NOW product is slightly better because it contains a little bit of chelated copper. Like I mentioned, one of the cool things about L-OptiZinc is that it doesn't block copper absorption and retention and utilization is superior to other forms, specially when compared to inorganic compounds like Zinc Oxide.
