Really, really slow acne healing - could supplements be the issue?

Post  scottyc33 on Tue Nov 10, 2009 1:33 pm

I'm 34 years old and rarely break out these days, but I've been prone to acne all of my life.
About 2 months ago I had a decent sized pimple form on my cheek that took over a month to heal!
It left me with a rather large red scar, and a minor indentation in my face.

About a week ago another pimple formed about an inch and a half below the prior pimple. This time, not wanting to take any chances, I decided to go to the dermatologist to get a shot of steroid to accelerate the healing. I had done this once before about 2 years ago and the pimple healed overnight!

This time however, NOTHING. It's been three days and the pimple is the same size as the day I got the shot.

Why the heck am I healing so slowly?

Could one / some of these supplements actually be inhibiting the healing process of my skin?

These are the only supps I have taken this past week:

Resveratrol
Circumin
ALC
R-ALA
Krill Oil
Vitamin D
Ecklonia Cava
Magnesium
Liv52
Beta _ Alanine (pre-workout)
BCAA (pre-workout)

Any other ideas?

I'm nervous about another scar forming.

OK - I found the thread I posted about the first pimple:

I guess I am going to try magnesium oil.

JDP - where do you get those lasers that you speak of?

Are you taking Iodine?

Add the following to your regimen to treat and prevent breakouts:

- 30 mg or more of L-OptiZinc
- 400 mcg or more of ChromeMate

This should help to your excercise routine too.

scottyc33 - At least in myself, if I take Pycnogenol, that does it for me, at least in the forehead area.

LittleFighter asked if you're taking iodine. If so, maybe there's a bromide problem.

The brewer's yeast I take totally eliminates acne for me, amazing stuff and great source of natural B-complex.

Scottyc33 - sounds like you may have a bigger problem somewhere...... pimples taking longer to heal and you also posted about not feeling very good for the last couple of months. Sounds like your body is overwhelmed in some way. It may be related to an allergy etc, but if i were you i would visit the doc and maybe get some tests done?

Here's my acne story

Post  tonyj on Wed Nov 11, 2009 2:53 am

When I was in my early 20's I started to get acne. For a while I was getting waves of acne and tried to cure it with tetracycline which left my teeth permanently yellow. My skin was so oily I could actually see oily residue on my fingers when I rubbed my face. I was into triathlons at the time and I decided I follow a diet regimen of one of my favorites athletes. His diet was basically tofu, vegetables, fruits and nuts. Mine was vegetables, fruit legumes and garbanzo beans, eating water filled vegetables throughout the day. I did not add oils, fats, salt or sugars to my diet, although I desperately wanted to. Within the first week, my production of oil on my face increased to the point where I got comments about it. The second week of the diet pimples came out what seemed in waves of dozens, a break out all over my face. By the third week the oil on my face and the pimple outbreak started to subside, but I was left with a cyst on the side of the head on the side burn which had to be removed later by a derm. 4th week on the diet, no more oil, just perspiration on the forehead without the oily residue. I talked to the dermatologist about this diet and he just seemed to dismiss it saying that there was probably no connection between the outbreak and diet. From then on I went on a vegetarian diet for a year and a half. I did get a pimple once in a great while then after several months no more pimples. When I reintroduced meat into my diet (as well as sugar, salts and oil), I started to get an occasional pimple after several months, but my acne never got as bad as it was before that vegetarian diet.

Yes - I had been taking 2-6 drops of Iosol a day. I've read that Iodine can aggravate break outs.

I think I'm done with the Iodine anyway. I don't necessarily buy the justification of why so much would be necessary.

Yes, that laser is fine. Not sure regarding reliability though. I personally bought my lasers from Aixiz but they get expensive ... mfgcn.com

Regarding Iodine and acne, it's very common to get acne when supplementing Iodine/Iodide due to the bromide. With that said, some people put a couple drops of Iodine/Iodide or just SSKI (i.e. Iodide) on a pimple. Also, some take tocotrienols to prevent scars.

hope this helps
