Kefir from Trader Joes

Post  j87x on Sat Mar 06, 2010 8:36 am

Is it ok to get Trader Joes kefir, or is it really that much worse than homemade? I have no access to raw milk (obviously better for kefir), so I just use pasteurized milk. Is it comparable?

If it has been heated above 105 degrees it is not comparable. The big deal about kefir is the enzyme content. Donna Gates has a book called "Body Ecology" that is quit informative. Anyway if your kefir is not raw then you are wasting your time. If you can stomach it Trader Joe's should have some raw sauerkraut, which is also a great source of probiotics.

Thanks, didn't know about the sauerkraut, will look to see if they sell kombucha tea also. As for the kefir, I read somewhere that it is added after the milk is pasteurized, so I just assume that they don't heat it.

Kefir is supposed to have hundreds of living organisms right? Well Lifeway and WholeFoods kefir says it only has 10. I'm guessing it's the same with Trader Joes. Why would it only have 10?

Probably because they added it in afterwords. The important aspects of kefir occur during fermentation. You can always get some kefir starter packets and some raw thai coconuts and make your own kefir.

I emailed Trader Joes and they said their kefir is made with real grains.
