OT: What is the best way to halt gum recession?

Post  big mike on Wed Jun 09, 2010 7:06 pm

I've always had weak gums but I'm noticing some severe recession on a couple of teeth. Any advice would be appreciated.

big mike - For your gums, wash with salt water regularly. Taking plenty of vitamin C with bioflavonoids (to support the connective tissue).

Take extra Vitamin K2 (5 mg or so) to help the teeth.

You would be talking about sea salt right CS? How about reversing receding gums is that possible? I heard using co enzyme 10 and using Peri-Gum mouthwash is good to. Will rinsing the mouth with salt water halt recession of the gums and possibly grow the connective tissue back or no? How much salt should we put i the water a teaspoon tablespoon?

Hairbeback - The kind of salt doesn't matter, since it is a rinse. Co-Q10 is good too, but vitamin C is the most important for gums by far.

There is a herb that can help too, I believe when applied to the gums. I can't remember the name right now but I'll look it up. Apparently you can get a pH neutral form of vit C. Apply both of those to your gums and that is said to have good results.

I will look up the name of the herb asap Smile

Why is it severe hair loss seems to correlate with gum loss? Is it because insulin resistance is one of the main factors of both?

With gum loss there is an increase in MMP's, so yes there is a connection.

I've been in a state of regeneration for years, but back in the good old bad days, I was in a constant state of degeneration and had bad gums.

IIRC, I read about people using Sodium Ascorbate powder and applying it to their gums to help with gum recession. Also can use blood root, cayenne powder and magnesium oil too.

You can also try oil pulling and/or swishing hydrogen peroxide (rinse with water after using HP) around in your mouth for a minute before bed.

How you brush your teeth matters a lot as does what type of brush you use. A sonicare is great at cleaning without causing recession which can be brought on by vigorous brushing with a hand-held tooth brush. The sonicare should be held lightly at the gum line to clean out the bacteria out of the recessed areas. Gentle toothpicking in between the teeth at gum level works great to stimulate circulation in the gums which causes the gums to strengthen and tighten around the teeth. Toothpicking (or using Stimudents--I look toothpics better b/c they don't shread) literally pushes out the bacteria that gets under the gum line. I had a recessed area on one of my lower front teeth and doing this has helped dramatically. I actually had oral surgery and it didn't help much until I really got in there with the sonicare are started toothpicking, then the gum around that tooth recovered. My dentist has said that my gums are in great shape--if your gums are healthy, you won't bleed when you get a dental cleaning and toothpicking is key--flossing is good but it's not stimulating enough. I also don't use any OTC harsh toothpastes. I like Jason's Nutrismile--it contains ester-c and CoQ10 to help protect your gums. Great stuff, although it does contain some fluoride, but I'm not concerned over a little bit of it. There's others that are fluoride-free. One thing that helps to remember to toothpick is to put them by the TV. I bought some really sturdy tea tree/cinnamin toothpicks and keep them in my desk at work. Yeah, occassionally someone will walk by when I have one in my mouth, but I don't care. I've got good gums because of it.

What would be good for reversing gum loss besides co enzyme 10 and a lot of vitamin C?

CS,

I would assume for the green tea to work it would have to be in the form of actual liquid tea coming into contact with the gums rather than supplements (capsules)??

isaac - No, in supplement form it will work just fine. The polyphenols absorb systemically.
