Cholesterol, fish oils & plant sterols

Post  adam2525 on Mon Mar 21, 2011 7:10 pm

Hi,

I'm 52, I have tinnitus, eye floaters, gout and of course hair loss.
The only meds I am on at the moment are 100 mg of Allopurinol for my gout.

My cholesterol levels are high (around 8 ish). I know this is due to a rubbish diet.
In the meantime my GP knows I wont take statins (sends my tinnitus through the roof) and he wants to take Omacor.

Omacor are Omega-3-acid ethyl esters 90.
Each capsule contains:
840 mg EPA ethyl ester
460 mg DHA ethyl ester
380 mg antioxidant 4 mg d-alpha - tocopherol

I also have a bottle of 1500mg Omega 3 Krill Oil

So, while I improve my diet and lose weight, I was thinking of taking one capsule of Krill oil in the morning and two capsules of Omacor (as per my GPs instructions) in the evening.

I was going to add some Lestrin (plant sterols) to the mix.
The active ingredient is Beta sitosterol. Each tablet contains 400 mg.
The recommended dose is 2 tabs twice a day (1600 mg)

1. Does all this sound OK?
2. Can I take too much fish oil?
3. Omacor & Krill both contain vitamin E. Can I take too much vitamin E.

Thanks,

Adam

adam2525 - Would not advise taking fish oil, Omacor, Lestrin (plant sterols), or beta-sitosterol.

Krill oil is very good though for a variety of reasons.

See this thread below for an explanation about the fish oil.

As far as phytosterols/beta sitosterol is concerned, this serves no value except for the very young, and even then should be quite temporary.

Lowering gut cholesterol will do several adverse things, namely lower testosterone, increase anxiety and depression, lower libido and it will reduce cholesterol too much.

Cholesterol is not a villain, but instead is protective. If the body lowers it, then the infection or inflammation is probably lower. See this article here below, it explains why cholesterol is protective.

Instead of Allopurinol, you might consider taking either celery seed extract or tart cherry extract instead, (these are side-effect free). Fructose in any form is the most notorious for causing gout attacks.

Regarding Vitamin E, taking both tocotrienols (much more powerful than regular vitamin E) is advisable. Taking too much Vitamin E can interfere with the uptake of tocotrienols. Opting for mixed tocopherols and tocotrienols is a good idea.

Here's a thread on tinnitus:
