Black pepper or Mervia Phytosome for better asorption of curcumin?

Post  finemrespice on Fri Apr 01, 2011 5:21 am

do we need these bc jarrow's do not have black pepper or it's not in phytosome form, so i wonder if the asorption is minimized. what do you experts think?

I've actually been using the Doctor's Best Meriva (Phytosome form) which is nicely priced. I'm not too keen on the black pepper extract version.

What I personally use to increase curcuminoid bioavailability: slightly heat MCT oil and/or palm oil, then open up the curcumin capsule and add it to the oil, add some tumeric and a small amount of bioperine or black pepper. I try not to use bioperine more than 5x a week.

I agree with IH. As I read, bioperine is unnecessary.

The following opinion may be in the minority, but I am finding that curcumin is not dose dependent. A lot of it (combined with resveratrol) is not needed in order to be effective.

And too much of it (e.g. BCM-95) may result in the opposite of what you have intended: namely, the shedding of hair. In this way, curcumin is similar, if not, identical to capsaicin (i.e. cayenne pepper). So you should be able to pretty much gage what effect curcumin (and resveratrol) will have on you hair with a single capsule of each.

THE NATURAL: do you think using tumeric whole herb is essentially effective as 500mg plus of just curcumin??

Post  finemrespice on Sat Apr 02, 2011 5:48 am

do you think 500mg of curcumin is too much and may cause shedding?

For most users, I do not think so.

Consider something like Jarrow curcumin 95 500 mg., which I've used before. One of these capsules a day should not cause shedding. But again, Jarrow's suggested use has, over the years, gone from 1-5 capsules daily, to 1-2 capsules daily, and now just "1 capsule per day," which seems to support statements that curcumin "may act as either an agonist or antagonist on sensory fibers."

Comparatively, a study of curcumin and resveratrol on male pattern baldness used 600 mg. of vitamin C, 600 mg. of wheat germ (vitamin E source), 80 mg. of curcumin, 40 mg. of resveratrol, and 50 mg. of capsaicin.

And the results were impressive: "...while the group treated with resveratrol and curcumin showed with great surprise a reduction, sometimes also relevant, in variable time periods. Moreover, during this testing, the patients treated with resveratrol and curcumin surprisingly showed positive improvements in the treatment of psoriasis and the attenuation and even a stop of the hair loss, a reduction of the hair graying and the rebirth of hair in bald areas sometimes even of the original color too."

I believe that Jarrow's curcumin (and resveratrol) are effective: They controlled my dandruff, stopped my hair loss, and provided some thin regrowth.

Though, now I understand that 125 mg. of curcumin and 15 mg. of resveratrol (as opposed to 500 mg. of curcumin and 100 mg. of resveratrol) can be just as effective.

inemrespice - I can say that at least based on reducing inflammation, the Phytosome version will work best.

However, in terms of the neurogenic downregulation, probably makes little difference.

This herb works in a surprisingly large number of ways. I could fill up a book with information with just curcumin alone.

Also, with respect to assimilation or absorption, a lot of the "magic" happens before it even arrives in the blood stream. Its interaction through the GI track has a strong influence on some of its workings.

Why do you think Doctor's Best is better than Jarrow's, is there something wrong with Jarrows version? I am asking because I use Jarrow's Curcumin Phytosome for almost a year.
